The night I saved a life

Tuesday, March 25, 2014

I had not slept for three days which made me so cranky. I had just been posted to pediatrics for my last posting. As the only house officer available it was just so stressful.

It was a Tuesday evening. I had a terrible argument with my kid sister over a dress. I said somethings I knew I shouldn't have said to her, but pride didn't let me apologize. I actually think I'm neurotic, what else would explain my moodiness.

I was on call again that night, and went to work with the " I don't care" attitude. I was too tired and planned to do nothing. I was just going to sit there and just watch. Thank goodness I took my iPad.

I was trying to concentrate on my vampire diaries when I looked over my iPad screen and saw a baby panting. I knew that baby was loosing breath but I did nothing. I looked around expecting one of the nurses to do something but there was no one there at that time. I couldn't bring myself to do it. To just sit there and let a baby die. I quickly jumped up and ran for the ambu bag and tried to    resuscitate the baby. I kept on squeezing on it, there was no difference but I didn't stop. At that point different images ran through my mind and I knew the life of that little child depended on me. I thought of the child's mother and how she would feel when she sees her dead child. I didn't want that to happen, I had had my own share of loosing a child and I didn't want that for the mother.

The nurses finally showed up and tried to make me let go, because it was obvious the baby wasn't going to survive. I refused, I didn't even realize I was already crying.  I squeezed harder, it felt as if my hands were going to fall off but I still didn't stop. All this started at about 8pm, finally at 10pm the baby was getting stable and I knew that if I had stopped then the baby would have died. I had to go on a steady pace until I saw good results. When I finally stopped squeezing was at 9am the next morning. The baby was finally stable , I connected the oxygen and I could finally rest. I had just saved a life. It was the most amazing feeling one could ever have. Moments like that is what makes me proud of being a doctor.

Natural movement.

Wednesday, March 12, 2014

So, I've decided to join the natural hair movement. I've come to the realization that my natural hair is way better than a chemically relaxed hair. I've decided to go natural.  Right now I'm in my transitioning  phase. I have here a few tips for my other sisters out there that want to join the natural hair movement. Let's all be proud of our natural hair.

Transitioning tips!
1) state of mind.
Transitioning is really hard. You have to be emotionally ready for this because you are going to get discouraged at some point. You are already used to combing your hair easily so it's gonna be hell combing the natural growth. Prepare your mind, so many times I get discouraged when u can't comb my hair or when it hurts.

2) good hair products.
Your hair is really sensitive at this point and needs extra care. I suggest you use natural products for your hair. You don't want any random chemical hindering your hair progress. I use natural coconut oil and shea butter commonly known as "ori", black soap instead of chemical shampoo. I have a lot of recipes for home made conditioners. Will share them later. You should also eat and drink healthy. Drink a lot of water, it affects the hair growth.

3) protective style
Pick a protective style that suits you. Braids or cornrows. My PS is kinki braids. Since I started the transitioning process, I use kinki braids to protect the hair.

4) the big chop
After your hair has gained some weight and length I suggest you do the big chop. Cut off all the relaxed hair and leave just the natural growth. Most people don't do the big chop but I actually think it's important. It gives more room for the natural hair and gives you more space to care for your new growth. But NOTE. When you've grown your natural hair , don't believe the myth that tells you cutting the edges makes your hair grow. It is so not true. You should only trim the edges when there is breakage. If you take care of your hair properly there would even be no breakage.

5) heat reduction.
Please reduce the direct heat to your hair. It would destroy your hair.

6) good saloon
Pick a good saloon where you can style your hair. I suggest you visit a saloon that deals with just natural hair. A regular stylist may not care for your properly. Deal with the experts.

I wish you all a happy transitioning. Join the movement today. For your natural coconut oil contact me directly on levy_braide@yahoo.com

And also to drop in a few words. I'll be turning 19 in a few days. This has got me thinking, some years ago I wrote down some goals I wanted to achieve before 20. Was just looking back and I have actually achieved a lot. Planning is very important. It's not too late to start planning and making goals. You could start with short term goals. The year just started it's not too late to make goals for this year. Setting goals actually makes you be a better person. #wordfortoday is start setting those goals. To reach me
